HALIFAX – It looks like Amazon is building a warehouse and a distribution centre at 180 Thornhill Drive in Dartmouth.

The official deed, dated March 29, confirms that Amazon Canada Fulfillment Services owns the property, which is valued at $3,961,300.

A spokesperson for the Halifax Regional Municipality confirmed that 180 Thornhill Drive has recently been approved for a renovation permit, and a demolition permit is currently under review. The application is under the name Aecom, an engineering consulting firm with an office in Halifax.

A local contractor who was in the running for one of the tenders on the project told Huddle that Amazon was specifically building a “warehouse/distribution centre.”

Amazon has yet to confirm details publicly. When asked by Huddle if the company is coming to HRM, a spokesperson for Amazon did not confirm or deny that they were opening a facility here.

“Amazon is a dynamic business and we are constantly exploring new locations and weighing a variety of factors when deciding where to develop future sites to best serve customers; however, we are not yet commenting on any specific operations plans at this time. Stay tuned!” stated an email from the spokesperson.

Huddle has since sent a follow-up email but hasn’t heard back yet.

Back in 2017, the city of Halifax submitted a bid, along with a host of other North American cities, to become the location of Amazon’s second headquarters. They even launched a slick website to publicly promote their bid to the corporation.

In the end, however, Toronto was the only Canadian city put on the shortlist for consideration by Amazon. Arlington, Virginia, eventually became the chosen city.
