CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. —

The city is set to sign a $6.8 million contract to upgrade the Bell Aliant Centre, the Eastlink Centre and other city facilities.

Little discussion was had on the contract when it was approved during a council meeting on Feb. 8. The majority of this fund will be financed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and Honeywell. The city will contribute about $900,000 toward the overall cost, which will be a capital budget expense.

According to the meeting's agenda, the funding will go toward energy retrofits and deferred maintenance needs. This includes replacing interior light fixtures with LED lights, improving power quality measures and ice plant controls and replacing various infrastructures such as transformers and boiler plants.

The city anticipates being reimbursed $800,000 via grants for the 2023 Canada Games, as the lighting fixture upgrades at the two centres must meet the Games' standards.
