The Transportation Standing Committee will be meeting today to discuss upcoming changes to the cost of bus tickets in the city.

A representative from a bus advocacy group says he'll be interested to learn more about changes to the cost of tickets specifically for youth and seniors

Scott Edgar with It's More Than Buses tells NEWS 95.7 he believes today's committee meeting will look into new prices for select users of the bus.

"But they're also I expect gonna be talking about some changes to the structure of the fares at Halifax Transit," explains Edgar. "So it's not just that there's an increase happening, it's that there's gonna be new categories of fare, old categories of fare are disappearing. So there're gonna be all kinds of changes that people are gonna have to get used to."

Edgar says some changes could hurt some users of the bus, but a small increase of 25 cents to base fares is necessary.

He adds another change will see the elimination of a seniors ticket.

"So previously, seniors have had a discounted fare, and children have had discounted fares in various ways, but what they are doing is eliminating the seniors discount, and then redirecting that money toward basically young people, and youth," says Edgar.

Edgar understands that the proposed bump in prices can impact many transit users, especially the poorest among the population, but the cost increase is necessary to improve the transit system in the city.
