SYDNEY, N.S. — A new book takes a look at the hidden history of the Tor Bay Acadians and their impact on the Maritimes and beyond.

Written by amateur historian Jude Avery, “The Forgotten Acadians … a story of discovery,” will be launched at La Picasse community centre in Petit De Grat on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. and there will be a book signing at the Cyril Ward Memorial Library in Guysborough later this month as well as at other locations.

Avery’s book begins with the early Acadians during the 17th and 18th centuries in the Maritimes, through to their present-day descendants in the Guysborough region of Nova Scotia. It offers readers a detailed account of the early oppression and genocide Acadians suffered at the hands of British rule and the subsequent contributions their descendants made and continue to make to Nova Scotia communities.

The author retraces the Acadian story from the 16th century Mi’kmaq and the seasonal Basque fishermen, to Samuel de Champlain’s visit to Tor Bay in Guysborough County and later, the Quiet Revolution in Quebec and the first Acadian premier of New Brunswick. Nationally, the author describes the emergence of the “Three Wise Men” who impacted the national perspective on bilingualism and multiculturalism in Canada forever.

“It is my hope that this book will instil in all Acadians the rich and important legacy they share with their courageous ancestors,” said Avery. “And for everyone, may it serve as an enticing invitation to explore this beautiful coastal area of Nova Scotia and its numerous vibrant Acadian communities.” he added.

Avery is an Acadian from Larry’s River in Guysborough County and a retired high school teacher. He devoted years of research to compiling documentation, photos and writing this book about the “lost chapter” of Acadians in Canadian and Maritime history.

He is also a double graduate of St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish.

“The Forgotten Acadians” is available at Chapters/Indigo/Coles bookstores, as well as independent bookstores and in selected gift shops throughout the Maritimes. “The Forgotten Acadians” may also be purchased directly from New World Publishing (Canada) for a special price of $16 (including postage and taxes anywhere in Canada) and for the same price in US dollars for that country.
